Gaza’s autistic children endure invisible crisis amid relentless bombardment and displacement

DEIR AL-BALAH – The parents of autistic children in the Gaza Strip are living through an unbearable and surreal conflict as relentless airstrikes and the mass evacuation of the area decimate any hope for the routines necessary for children to survive.

Gaza’s healthcare and education system has been all but destroyed by the Israeli army’s offensive, leaving thousands of children with autism spectrum disorder without the behavioral therapy and support they require. For the parents of these children, the situation is further exacerbated by the stresses of living in a region embroiled in a major conflict.

Doctors and activists say that the bombardments and the conditions within Gaza are particularly damaging to people with autism, due to their sensory processing issues.

The deafening blasts of munitions, the persistent buzzing of surveillance drones, and the chaotic, unsanitary conditions of overcrowded displacement camps trigger immense distress. Deprived of basic coping tools like noise-canceling headphones or quiet spaces, many autistic children are experiencing acute panic attacks, engaging in self-harm, and losing previously acquired speech and motor skills.

Prior to the escalation of hostilities, the coastal territory maintained a modest network of rehabilitation clinics and specialized schools. Today, nearly all of these facilities have either been reduced to rubble or hastily repurposed as emergency shelters for fleeing populations. The collapse of these medical lifelines has abruptly halted all occupational and speech therapies across the strip.

The strict blockade on commercial goods and humanitarian aid has disproportionately impacted vulnerable families. Many neurodivergent children require specific dietary accommodations that are now entirely impossible to secure amid widespread famine conditions. Parents recount the daily, heartbreaking struggle of trying to comfort children who cannot understand why their homes are gone, their daily schedules have vanished, and their familiar meals are unavailable.

Global health professionals warn that the profound trauma inflicted on disabled Palestinians will yield irreversible, long-term consequences. Rights organizations are urgently demanding that the international community prioritize specialized medical evacuations and establish protected corridors, warning that Gaza’s autistic youth are paying an unbearable psychological toll.
