Yemeni Forces Thwart Houthi Assault in Taiz as Broader Conflict Escalates Across Frontlines
TAIZ, Yemen – Internationally recognized Yemeni government forces have successfully driven back a major Houthi insurgent offensive in the southeast of Taiz governorate, which has once again exacerbated tensions in the country’s renewed military conflict.
Military operations were launched on the strategic al-Mafalis line near the Haifan district, where brigades of the Tor al-Bahah operational command fought the attacking forces.
Yemeni military sources reported that considerable numbers of rebels suffered losses, and their attacking units had to retreat, having failed to achieve any military success. In addition, security forces in the south-western direction of the capital have been placed on high alert.
Meanwhile, government forces managed to shoot down several Houthi reconnaissance drones in the coastal city of Mocha.
This latest clash follows a wider offensive launched by pro-government battalions across several provinces on Wednesday. Heavy artillery barrages and targeted drone operations hit multiple insurgent encampments, notably near the al-Fakhir trade hub in northern al-Dhalea. Yemeni state broadcasting confirmed that sustained shelling disrupted rebel logistics and caused numerous casualties among frontline Houthi troops.
Information Ministry officials emphasized that these combined strikes aim to dismantle insurgent positions threatening key regional transit corridors.
Addressing the rising violence, Presidential Leadership Council Chairman Rashad al-Alimi affirmed that military operations would continue without hesitation. The state leader rejected proposals for temporary armistices, arguing that short-term truces merely allow rebel forces to regroup.
Instead, al-Alimi maintained that lasting stability requires complete disarmament of non-state militias and full restoration of national sovereignty under a unified state military command, though he noted political channels remain open for fighters willing to surrender their weapons.
The recent uptick in hostilities threatens a fragile period of reduced violence that had largely persisted since a United Nations-mediated truce took effect in April 2022. Intermittent skirmishes resurfaced in early July, rapidly expanding into direct artillery duels, drone strikes, and fatal attacks along Red Sea commercial shipping routes.
As military operations intensify across Taiz, al-Dhalea, and coastal Mocha, regional observers warn that the failure to contain frontline clashes could trigger a full-scale resumption of Yemen’s long-standing conflict.
