Toxic Fumes at Southern Egypt Processing Facility Claim Two Lives and Hospitalize Six
A tragic industrial accident happened in Upper Egypt which caused two people to die and six workers to be taken to the hospital. The local officials said that toxic gases built up inside a food processing vat.
The accident happened in a village called Sheikh Alaa, it is in the Minya Governorate, which’s south of Cairo. People had to rush to save workers who were stuck inside an underground vat used for pickling.
Emergency workers said the accident started when a woman from the factory fell into a concrete container. It was used to process fruits and vegetables. A man who worked with her went in to pull her out. Both of them were quickly affected by the bad air inside the container.
As the emergency escalated, six additional facility employees attempted to intervene and pull their colleagues out. Due to the lack of specialized ventilation equipment and proper protective gear, the rescuers quickly experienced acute respiratory distress from the noxious emissions generated during organic fermentation. Several rescuers lost consciousness and fell into the basin before bystander intervention managed to extract them from the site.
Medical personnel dispatched to the scene confirmed that both the woman and her initial rescuer succumbed to severe asphyxiation, which triggered fatal cardiac arrest prior to hospital transport. The six surviving staff members were transported to a nearby medical facility for emergency respiratory care.
Egypt’s Public Prosecution has launched a formal criminal investigation into the event. State prosecutors are evaluating facility management practices, environmental safety standards, and whether statutory occupational safety guidelines were breached.
Central to the inquiry is whether the processing site maintained adequate ventilation systems and mandated protective measures for personnel operating near hazardous confined chemical vats.
The tragedy underscores ongoing safety concerns across industrial food production plants operating in regional agricultural zones. Hazardous chemical gases, such as hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide, regularly accumulate in unventilated pickling pits and silos, creating life-threatening environments without immediate visual warnings.
