Headline: Israel’s Defense Minister Commends Radical Settlers Occupying Evacuated West Bank Outpost
JERUSALEM – Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz has said things about members of the extremist group called “Hilltop Youth” for taking over land at Ganim. Ganim is a place in the West Bank that was left empty a time ago. The place was taken down by the authorities more than twenty years ago.
Speaking about the group’s move into the area near Jenin in the northern West Bank Katz thanked the radical religious Zionist activists for staying on the land that is occupied by Palestinians. The public support from a ranking military leader shows a clear political approval of illegal settler expansion in the occupied areas.
Ganim was first left empty and destroyed in 2005 as part of Israels plan to move away from some areas. This plan ended the presence of Jewish settlements in parts of the northern West Bank and, in the Gaza Strip.
The Hilltop Youth movement is widely documented by human rights organizations for constructing illegal outposts, seizing agricultural fields, and carrying out violent attacks against local Palestinian villagers.
While previous defense establishments periodically restricted the group’s movement, the present administration in Tel Aviv has increasingly aligned itself with far-right nationalist factions seeking to expand territorial control.
Katz’s explicit backing of the group’s return to Ganim signals a formal pivot toward reversing past evacuation decisions and institutionalizing settler presence in strategic rural zones. Political analysts view the move as part of a systematic policy to sever geographic continuity between Palestinian towns while granting informal legitimacy to vigilante land-grabs.
Human rights advocates stress that state encouragement of radical outposts directly fuels systemic harassment and displacement of Palestinian communities. Armed settlers, often shielded by security personnel, have established dozens of new forward outposts throughout the West Bank over recent months, exploiting heightened regional tension to consolidate physical control over agrarian lands.
Under international law, including numerous rulings by the International Court of Justice and UN Security Council resolutions, all settlements established in territories occupied since 1967 are entirely illegal.
The international community continues to emphasize that unchecked settlement expansion violates human rights and destroys the viability of a contiguous independent state for Palestinians. Nevertheless, Minister Katz’s statements highlight how far-right settler ambitions have been fully integrated into the official stance of Israel’s defense command structure.
